With parents and children preparing themselves for the new school year, now is the ideal time to take a trip to the dentist should be on everyone's back-to-school checklist.

With the new Autumn school term about to commence now is the perfect time to book a family dental appointment because health is closely linked to academic success, and a back-to-school dental checkup provides an opportunity to review brushing and flossing best practices, as well as identify any potential dental health problems that can be addressed before the school year starts so there is no need for your children to miss school.

Children with poor dental health can face problems at school, including pain that can lead to difficulty eating, sleeping and concentrating; poor nutrition; low self-esteem; and other health problems. American Studies have demonstrated the link between poor dental health and low grade point averages claiming that nearly three times more missed days at school due to dental problems.

The NHS website says that “Your dentist will also decide how often they need to see your child based on the condition of their mouth, teeth and gums. However, children should be seen by a dentist at least once a year.”

While tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, it is also one of the most treatable. You can help your children avoid tooth decay by remembering to book those dental checkups every six months, cutting out those sugary foods in your children’s diets, and by encouraging regular, brushing and flossing.

In between regular dental checkups, it’s important to follow these three dental tips so that your child stays healthy and decay free.

  • Make sure that you eat 3 healthy meals a day
  • Brush twice each day (morning and night)
  • Floss at least once every day
