Five ways to achieve a whiter spring smile

Posted by Default Admin on 31 March 2015

Spring has finally arrived and with this is mind many of us may be considering having our teeth whitened or naturally whitening them in time for those social summer events and weddings.

Many foods and drinks can stain teeth, and over time and with age, our teeth can start to discolour.

Here are five techniques that you could try to achieve a whiter spring smile:

Baking Soda

This is probably the method that is most familiar to many people, as baking soda is now being added to many commercial types of toothpaste.

Many people use baking soda and mix it with strawberries to make a fruity whitening paste.
Try this once a week and remember that you only need to use one strawberry because they contain lots of sugar.

Lemons are well known for whitening your laundry, but did you know they can also whiten your teeth?

A bowl of freshly squeezed lemon with some baking soda can help to achieve a whiter spring smile however, lemon is high in acid so it's important to consult your dentist before using this method to avoid acids wreaking havoc on your tooth enamel.

You should make sure that you remove the solution after one minute and brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste to remove any excess acid.

Olive Oil

This might come as surprise to many but olive oil can also help to bring out the sparkle within our smile. Many stains are fat soluble, so the fat in the oil can help to lift stains from teeth.

This method is called ‘Oil Pulling’. Olive oil is the most common oil used, but sesame and coconut oil can also be used. All you need is a tablespoon of your chosen oil, then either swish the liquid around your mouth thoroughly, or brush it into your teeth for around five minutes[AT2] .

Extra virgin coconut oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, whilst not scientifically proven it has proved to be a widely popular trend in recent years.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar has been proven to help whiten teeth, but its needs to be used consistently, and it can also take at least one month before you start to see results. You need to be careful with the acids in this as they can remove the enamel on your teeth as well. After brushing with ACV, you will need to brush again with regular toothpaste, using a non fluoride paste, or rinse your mouth out really well.

You can avoid teeth stains so that you can enjoy whiter teeth for longer. You can help to prevent stains and maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing and using mouthwash at least once a day.
